About

Matthew Wojciechowski grew up in Houston, Texas. After High School, he attended the University of Houston and studied for a Bachelors of Fine Arts (sorry, no degree). During college he met up with Richard Stell, renowned tattoo artist who has become one of the most sought after tattooers and painters today, and started apprenticing under him at Scorpion Studios. Matthew finished his apprenticeship and started tattooing in 1992.

Matthew started gaining a reputation for large, bold color work in Houston and around the tattoo community. In 1994, he took over Scorpion Studios. Matthew also started building his reputation by traveling and tattooing on the tattoo convention circuit in America in almost all 50 states and Europe doing s conventions in Amsterdam, San Francisco, New York, Frankfurt, Stockholm, Dallas, Houston, Bologna, Berlin and many more European cities. Some of the notable shops he’s worked with long the way are Everlasting Tattoo (San Francisco), Guilty and Innocent (Chicago), Tin Tin’s Tattoo (Paris), Pair o’ Dice (Dallas),Slave to the Needle (Seattle), Sunset Tattoo, (Hamburg), East Street Tattoo (Stockholm), Reativ Tattoo (Innsbruck), Little Vinnes’ Tattoo (Westminster), Wankantanka Tattoo (Mexico City)and many others. Along with his passion for traveling, Matthew started exploring media and has publishing in such magazines as Tattoo, Easy Rider, Flash, International Tattoo Art, Tattoo Planet, Tattoo Energy, Tattooer, and others small articles.

Matthew continued to work in Houston as the proprietor of Scorpion Studios until 1996 when he sold the shop to Dan Martin (who still operates it today). After a brief stint in Memphis, he returned to Houston to work at Hot Stuff Deluxe Tattoo under Eric Doyle. In 2002, he took over the shop and it reemerged as Amazing Tattoo. Looking for a change of pace and new challenges, he sold Amazing Tattoo to Steve Comeaux in 2009.

Matthew currently works for the legendary Jinx Proof in Washington, DC. It is the first and longest running shop in D.C., known locally and internationally for their consistently high caliber work. This was a natural move for Matthew, since he’s known and worked with most of the staff for more than a decade.

Matthew’s work has evolved over the years to not only include the color work but he has also emerged as a strong black and grey artist. Each medium has its own unique strength and he uses his 18 years of experience to choose the best style for the look your going for. As far as, subject matter goes, he’s b personally interested in Tibetan influenced Asian art (See paintings section) and any mythological art whether it’s Japanese, Chinese, Greek, Celtic, Mayan, Indonesian etc.. As you can see, Matthew’s interests are varied, and when it comes down to it he likes any project where he can see the potential for a good design.

Matthew’s overall goal is to provide his customers and art collectors with high quality tattoos that incorporate exceptional artistry and design. Matthew believes in being a lifelong learner and continues to cultivate his art and craft by bringing what he has learned from experience, collaboration, and classes at the Corcoran to Jinx Proof and his clientele.
